"Greeting" the Academic Year 2020 - 2021 with the Opening Ceremony

Our University "greeted" the Academic Year 2020 - 2021 with the Opening Ceremony held online.

The Academic Year Opening Ceremony planned to be held online in Adem Çelik Conference Hall on Ayazağa-Maslak Campus started at 10.00 am on Monday, 5 October 2020.

Beginning with the Academic Year Opening Speech by our Rector Prof. Murat Ferman, the ceremony continued with the Opening Course taught by the Faculty Member Prof. Can Polat Eyigün MD of our University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology.

In his opening speech, Prof. Ferman gave information about our distance education system.

Stating that they started working on the issue in the previous Spring Term, Prof. Ferman said, 'We continued to teach our lessons as usual for the first 5 weeks of the previous Spring Term. Among 207 universities in our country, we made it to top 6 on the list of universities handling the distance education most competently. We are one of those 6 universities which the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council will reference and seek advice from in developing the quality assessment tool for assessing the quality of distance education. We are making 3,851 courses available this term. At this point, we are talking about an extraordinarily large number of courses which is 5 to 10 times greater compared to the neighbouring campuses.'

"25 STUDENTS PER ACADEMICIAN"

Pointing out that the number of academicians has approached one thousand, Prof. Ferman stated, 'We reduced the number of students per academician to 25 with the number of academicians approaching one thousand. Now there are 25 students per academician. This is a rare advantage and feature even in America. We are also ready to go back to the classrooms at once as soon as the the conditions allow. As expressed at the previous academic general meetings, we have actually entered a period where it is our academicians who are expected to make more sacrifices. We are not aiming to offer distance education only for the sake of offering it, but we, in our unique way as Beykent, have the determination and the will, and are preparing, to do better than all the minimum conditions provided for by the international standards.'

Prof. Ferman went on to say:

"First and foremost, I would like to remind you all that we have not cancelled our applied courses, but delayed them. We have essentially left the ninth month behind in the Covid-19 conjuncture. We, as both Turkey and the whole world, have learned quite a lot from the happenings. And we are constantly seeking ways of acting accordingly. We commenced the required preparation process weeks before for this period of uncertainty. The system we have adopted is the hybrid education model. Relevant authorities have been informed that our University wants to implement the hybrid education model in the Academic Year 2020 - 2021. However, the current status of the infection, the matters communicated to us by the Ministry of Health through the CoHE, and the CoHE's resulting decision on the issue suggest online education for us, as for all the other universities, at the moment.

A MESSAGE FOR THE NEW STUDENTS

Addressing the new students enrolling at Beykent University for the Academic Year 2020 - 2021, Mr Ferman ended his speech saying, 'A student means one who requests to study. You knock the door and it will open eventually. Attend the online courses by making your own contribution with the intention of learning something. I kindly request you to spend this term by making full use of the new opportunities brought by the technology."

The ceremony continued with the speeches by Mustafa Gider, President of the Student Council, and Burak Kadir Aykul, Deputy President of the Alumni Association, followed by the Opening Course.

Following the Opening Course "Covid-19: Everything We Wonder" taught by the Faculty Member Prof. Can Polat Eyigün MD of our University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, awards were presented to the students placed at the Faculties and Schools with the highest scores in the Academic Year 2020 - 2021.

After the Opening Course and the presentation of awards, the Academic Year Opening Ceremony our students attended online continued with the orientation programme for the newly registered students.

During the orientation programme, academic and administrative units informed the students about their roles and scopes of work.
